Winter Colors

The first chicken eggs that come after a long Autumn molt are always so stunning and colorful. When a hen takes a break from laying, she recharges her “ink” cartridges (if you will) and when she starts laying again, the colors are amazing. As the laying season progresses, the colors start to fade until the next season. I have been hatching chicks throughout the holiday season to test for fertility and viability. I like raising chicks in the Winter. They seem to be hardier than chicks raised in the warmer months. This year I am adding around 200 additional layers to my flock. I sell a lot of farm-fresh eating eggs and later this year I will be able to provide even more farm-fresh eggs than I currently do.

I am excited about a few new breeds that I have been raising up. My most anticipated breed is the Langshans that I have added to my flock. THESE ARE BIG BIRDS! They are gorgeous too! I purchased Langshan chicks last year from Spectrum Poultry and the investment so far has been worth every penny. I can’t wait to share these birds with you later this Spring and look forward to my first hatch of their eggs.

Our flock is forever changing and so much fun. We have purchased hatching eggs from all over the United States from many different farms over the years. The different breeds offer different colors and sizes of eggs and add beautiful birds that free-range in our pasture and yard.

For now - enjoy this egg eye candy! These eggs are safely in the incubator now along with about 12 dozen others and are growing into some new little fluffy butts…
